Question: At what point in your career can you write a 40 page resume that includes mention of every job you’ve ever had, in excruciating detail?
Answer: NEVER.
Even if you have worked 10-15 years in an industry or specific profession, resumes are a highlight reel. You can regale your coworkers with the minutia of your career after you’ve been hired and corned them at the coffee bar. But keep all of that extra boring stuff OFF of your resume. Please and thank you.

As a mid-career professional, you may have accumulated a wealth of experience and accomplishments in your career that you want to showcase on your resume. However, you may also wonder how long your resume should be to ensure it is effective in getting you noticed by potential employers. Let’s talk about explore how long a mid-career professional’s resume should be and provide some tips on how to create an effective resume.
The length of your resume ultimately depends on the complexity of your work history and the relevance of your experiences to the job you are applying for. Generally, a mid-career professional’s resume should be 2-3 pages long, although some industries or roles may require longer resumes. It is essential to strike a balance between providing enough information to highlight your experience and achievements while also keeping your resume concise and easy to read.
Here are some tips to create an effective mid-career professional’s resume:
Focus on the most recent and relevant experiences
When you have a long work history, it can be tempting to include every job you’ve had on your resume. However, employers are more interested in your most recent experiences and how they relate to the job you are applying for. Make sure to highlight your most recent roles and experiences and prioritize the ones that are most relevant to the position.
Use bullet points to highlight accomplishments
Instead of simply listing your job responsibilities, use bullet points to highlight specific accomplishments and achievements in your past roles. This will show employers how you have made an impact in your previous positions and what you can bring to their organization.

Tailor your resume to the job
Avoid using a one-size-fits-all resume for every job you apply for. Instead, take the time to tailor your resume to the specific job you are applying for. This includes using keywords from the job description, highlighting relevant experiences, and demonstrating how you can contribute to the company’s goals.
Keep the formatting simple and consistent
A well-organized resume with consistent formatting makes it easy for employers to skim through and identify key information. Use simple and easy-to-read fonts, bullet points, and headings to make your resume visually appealing and easy to navigate.
Use these tips to keep your resume to 2-3 pages long, depending on the complexity of your work history and the relevance of your experiences to the job you are applying for. I personally encourage my clients to keep their resume to no longer than 2 pages because many HR professionals will only glance at the first page anyway. Focus on your most recent and relevant experiences, use bullet points to highlight accomplishments, tailor your resume to the job, and keep the formatting simple and consistent. By following these tips, you can create an effective resume that showcases your experience and helps you stand out to potential employers.
